This monument is to commemorate the battle of Thermopylae.
The Persians demanded that the Spartans surrender their weapons... to which King Leonidas responded, "Come and get them!" Needless to say, that didn't make the Persians too happy. :O)
This is the battle of the 300... which the movie "300" is based on.
